Travelling Training

dog travelling trainingGet your puppy used to travel by car from he/she is quite small, so it does not make the puppy anxiously.
Be well prepared for the travel - it will make your travel more enjoyable both for you and your dog.
Here are a few tips on how to train and travel with a dog.

  • When sitting in the car with the dog, play with him/her and give it a reward.
  • Drive a few short trips before you will drive long trips.
  • A good walk/play with the dog in the garden can help to calm the animal before the travel.
  • Make sure your pet always has a proper identification (microchip or tattoo) and a nametag with your phone number on.
  • Keep your dog on a leash, even if he/she well responds to your voice commands. The dog can easily be scared in a new environment!
  • Ask your veterinarian about travel sickness remedies and remember to take them when travelling.
  • Take your dog’s supplies: the usual food, medicine, bowls, pick-up bags and a plastic bottle with cold water.
  • Dogs should not be allowed to drive with head out the car window. Small particles of dirt can get in eyes, ears and nose, so the dog gets hurt or gets an infection.
  • Visit your veterinarian at least 30 days before the travel and tell him, what country you will visit and how you will travel. Veterinarian can inform you about the necessary vaccinations/other formalities.
  • Ask your vet for the name of a good boarding kennel, so you are prepared if you change your plans last minute and cannot take your dog with you.

Just before a trip give your dog a good walk with light exercise or play.
Keep the dog on a leash when you shut it out of the car during the stop on the journey.
